Dal 27 giugno al 2 luglio 2016 alle Isole Canarie si celebra il genio di Stephen Hawking.
Brian May, immancabile ospite fin dalla prima edizione, conclude la manifestazione a Tenerife venerdì 1 luglio, prima della cerimonia chiusura, suonando insieme al mitico tastierista Rick Wakeman (ex Yes) e Hans Zimmer.
Brian arriva a Tenerife il 29 giugno per introdurre come da programma (vedi quello completo più in basso nell'articolo) il filmato stereoscopico di 12 minuti "The 3-D Universe". Appena terminata la sua presentazione è subito andato dallo scienziato Stephen Hawking per reggergli il visore Owl-VR con il quale ha potuto a sua volta guardare lo stesso video.
Il momento musicale in programma l'1 luglio con il concerto Sonic Universe ha visto il tastierista Rick Wakeman (Yes) omaggiare David Bowie, e gli Anatema (band di Liverpool) tributare la loro esibizione a Stephen Hawking (presente con loro sul palco).
Brian May ha suonato un passaggio da brividi con il guppo di Hans Zimmer (semmai il suo nome non vi dovesse dire niente pensate già solo alle colonne sonore de Il Gladiatore e Il Re Leone).
■ La presentazione
Il 12 maggio 2016 al CaixaForum di Madrid è stato presentato il programma della terza edizione del festival Starmus.
Nel 2016 è intitolato "Oltre l’orizzonte - Omaggio a Stephen Hawking", e rende omaggio al grande scienziato inglese.
Alla presentazione hanno partecipato Garik Israelian ─ astrofisico, fondatore e direttore di Starmus ─ e da altre autorità politiche locali di La Palma e Tenerife. C’è stato anche l'intervento di Jill Tarter, astrofisico del SETI.
In questa terza edizione è stato fatto un grande sforzo per mettere insieme non solo relatori di livello nel campo scientifico, ma anche in campo artistico e musicale, da vari continenti, per condividere le loro esperienze e conoscenze.
Rendere omaggio a Stephen Hawking è una delle prerogative del festival di quest'anno.
Una delle grandi novità di questa edizione sarà la consegna della “Medaglia Stephen Hawking per la Divulgazione Scientifica”, un premio presentato dallo stesso Stephen Hawking. In questa prima edizione del premio sono stati scelti i meriti scientifici, nelle discipline scientifiche, nell’arte e nel cinema.
■ Arte, musica e scienza
Nelle due edizioni precedenti del 2011 e 2014 hanno preso parte personaggi come l'astronauta Neil Armstrong e il prof. Stephen Hawking. Questa volta, il programma Starmus III coinvolgerà undici premi Nobel in discipline quali la fisica, la chimica, la medicina e l'astronomia, insieme ad altri relatori di grande prestigio.
Presenza costante quella di Brian May, in tutte le edizioni, protagonista attesissimo di conferenze e spettacoli di musica live.
Brian è un grande amico del fondatore del festival, Garik Israelian, dal quale si ispirò per la propria tesi di laurea.
In esclusiva per la terza edizione di Starmus, Brian Eno ha creato una composizione musicale basata sui veri suoni emessi nello spazio dalle stelle, provenienti dagli archivi di Garik Israelian.
Chris Hadfield e Rick Wakeman porteranno un tributo speciale a David Bowie, con interpretazioni delle canzoni leggendarie da Space Oddity e Life on Mars del Duca Bianco.
Il programma musicale viene chiuso con l’esibizione del gruppo rock Anathema, di Liverpool.
